Vesting refers to the ownership of your 401(k). When you make a contribution to your 401k, the money is 100% yours. When the company makes a contribution or matches your contribution, your ownership of those funds may be vested over time as specified in the plan document. Three common vesting schedules for retirement accounts are immediate vesting, cliff vesting and graded vesting.
